Keynote: Dr. Jeff Dahn
NSERC/Tesla Canada Industrial Research Chair, Dalhousie University

Jeff Dahn is recognized as one of the pioneering developers of the lithium-ion battery that is now used worldwide in laptop computers and cell-phones.

Dahn's recent work has concentrated on increasing the energy density, improving the lifetime and lowering the cost of lithium ion batteries. He is the author of over 640 refereed journal papers and co-inventor of 65 inventions with patents issued or filed.

Jeff Dahn has always interacted strongly with industry. During his years at Simon Fraser University (90-96) he collaborated strongly with the R+D team at NEC/Moli Energy Canada (Now E-One/Moli Energy Canada). Dr. Dahn took up the NSERC/3M Canada Industrial Research Chair in Materials for Advanced Batteries at Dalhousie University in 1996 and held that position until 2016. In June 2016, Dr. Dahn began a 5-year research partnership with Tesla Motors/Energy as an NSERC/Tesla Canada Industrial Research Chair.

Keynote: Prof. Stanley Whittingham
2019 Nobel Prize in Chemistry

Stanley Whittingham is a SUNY distinguished professor of chemistry and materials science and engineering at Binghamton and the 2019 Chemistry Nobel Laureate. He received his BA and D Phil degrees in chemistry from Oxford University, where he is an honorary Fellow of New College. He has been active in Li-batteries since 1971 when he won the Young Author Award of the Electrochemical Society for his work on beta-alumina. In 1972, he joined Exxon and discovered the role of intercalation in battery reactions, which resulted in the first commercial lithium rechargeable batteries that were built by Exxon Enterprises.

In 1988 he returned to academia at Binghamton University (SUNY) to initiate a program in materials chemistry. In 2018 he was elected a member of the National Academy of Engineering and received the Turnbull Award from MRS. He is an Honorary Member of the Electrochemical Society; Foreign Member of the Royal Spanish Academy of Sciences, Honorary Fellow of New College, Oxford; Fellow of the Royal Society, of MRS, ISE and ICDD. Presently his research addresses pushing lithium batteries to their limits and in assisting in creating an American lithium battery industry; he is the Director of the NorthEast Center for Chemical Energy Storage (NECCES) and of Battery-NY. He is on the leadership team of the two US battery consortia, NYBEST and NAATBatt.

John Kincaide
President, Boulderwood Holdings Inc. dba , 2ndLife Batteries®

In January 2010, John Kincaide founded in Toronto what became WeRecycleBatteries.com and, a battery recycling brokerage business that has recycled millions of Kgs of batteries of all major types from across Canada and the USA.

In 2016, after inventorying a large amount of backup power scrap lead-acid batteries, he realized most of them were reusable. John started 2ndLife Batteries® in early 2017. He is currently, co-chair for the NAATBatt, Recycling, Trace-Exchange, and Second-Life committees, and past Silver Member of the NAATBatt board of Directors.
