Practical Guide to Using Marine Fasteners (10045)
By Ralph W. Ross Jr. and Arthur H. Tuthill, reprinted from Materials Performance, Apr. 1990.
The marine corrosion resistance of copper-, iron-, nickel-, and aluminum-based alloy fasteners is reviewed, coated-steel systems also being included.
Several new alloys are characterized as candidate materials while galvanic compatibility is identified as the most critical consideration for marine fasteners.
Guidelines are presented to assist designers in the selection of appropriate marine fastener materials.
