About The Nickel Institute

The Nickel Institute is a nonprofit organization that represents the interests of 24 companies which together produce more than 90% of the world’s annual nickel output. The Institute was established on January 1, 2004, through the merger of the Nickel Development Institute (NiDI) and the Nickel Producers Environmental Research Association (NiPERA).

We promote on behalf of our members the production, use and re-use (through recycling) of nickel in a socially and environmental responsible manner.

This is achieved through:

  • Promoting sustainable production and usage
  • Advocating and developing sound science
  • Developing partnerships through the value chain
  • Proactively engaging with stakeholders
  • Maintaining transparency and integrity in all our business relationships
  • Working to earn the trust of our stakeholders

Today, 27 of the world’s nickel producers are members of the Nickel Institute. We provide a common, responsible voice for the global industry and we work with other international metals associations and stainless steel development associations to develop and promote the safe use of nickel around the world.

We pursue market development through a worldwide network of highly qualified specialists, offering free technical knowledge about nickel, its properties and uses to ensure optimum performance, safe handling and use.

We actively initiate and fund scientific research programmes that examine the role of nickel in human health and the environment.

We share our knowledge about nickel freely and strive to ensure that sound science is used as the basis for regulation of the nickel industry and its user industries.
