Environmental Issues Facing Stainless Steel
April 18, 2002 -- Ivor Kirman, President of the Nickel Development Institute will address the "Present State of Environmental Issues in the Stainless Steel Industry," at the opening plenary session of the 4th European Stainless Steel, Science and Market Congress, to be held June 10-13, 2002 in Paris, France.
With worldwide production of 18.7 million tonnes in 2000 and a growth rate of 6% per annum in the past 20 years, stainless steels are increasingly making positive contributions to improving the world's environment and the quality of our everyday lives. However, these benefits are not widely known. Dr. Kirman will describe this challenge and will give some thoughts on how it can be met for the industry to remain profitable.
The congress, which will be held at the Cite des Sciences et de l'Industrie, La Villette, will also feature the following presentations by other NiDI managers and consultants:
"New Guidance Documents Governing the Selection and Safety Evaluation of Materials for Food Use," by Eric Partington, Consultant to NiDI.
"Stainless Steel and Sustainable Construction. Case Studies from Europe and North America," by Geoff Stone, Consultant to NiDI.
"Railway, Roads and Sub-sea Tunnels - Are the Key Links Stainless?," by David Cochrane, Consultant to NiDI.
Keynote Address: "Economic and Environmental Benefits which Stainless Steel Offers the Water Industry," by Peter Cutler, NiDI Technical Director, Europe.
"Application of Stainless Steel to Potable Water Service in Japan," by Koichiro Osozawa, NiDI Japan.
