Stewardship Takes Centre Stage
October 30, 2007 -- Recognizing the importance of stewardship to the long-term health of the nickel industry, the Nickel Institute has made stewardship and sustainability the two overarching principles of its work.
That message was delivered by Bruce McKean, Director, Sustainability & Stewardship of the Nickel Institute, to an audience at the Mineral Council of Australia’s Sustainable Development Conference, which was held in Cairns, Australia, October 29 to November 2.
In his presentation, McKean defined stewardship for the audience; explained why stewardship should be done; described the various types of stewardship that are practiced in the metals industry; explained how the Nickel Institute is organized for stewardship; and how the Nickel Institute practices stewardship today.
“Recent developments,” McKean said, “have formalized past practice as policy and will become even more influential in how we interact with the nickel value chain, stakeholders and society as a whole.”

| NOTE: The Nickel Institute does not present forecasts or comments on nickel markets, prices or supply/demand. The Nickel Institute does promote the long term use of nickel to contribute to a sustainable future. The unique properties of nickel mean that it has the ability to play a significant role in daily living and the industries of today and the future. For this reason the nickel industry is currently investing billions of dollars in new projects around the globe most notably in Australia, Brazil, Canada, New Caledonia and Russia. Whenever the Nickel Institute makes a public comment, any opinions expressed or implied are those of the Nickel Institute and not necessarily those of its members. |
