Flue Gas Desulfurization (10072)
By W.H.D. Plant and W.L. Mathay. Flue gas desulfurization (FGD) is the removal of the sulfur oxides from gaseous products produced by the combustion of fossil fuels. Conventional combustion technology results in most of the sulfur in the fuel being oxidized and released into the flue gas - which contributes to the formation of "Acid Rain". Energy conservation and the burning of low sulfur fuels in place of high-sulfur fuels have played a part in achieving reduction in total pollution, but sulfur oxide capture technology is still necessary. In this regard, current emphasis is upon removal of the sulfur oxides after combustion by wet scrubbing with alkaline slurries such as lime/limestone with or without the recovery of gypsum.
