Corrosive Aqueous Environments (10026)
By George E. Moller and Richard E. Avery, presented at Air Pollution Seminar, Buffalo, NY, U.S.A., Oct 1987. Corrosion-resistant stainless steel structures, built for service in acidic and neutral chloride environments can have their inherent corrosion resistant properties destroyed by fabrication and rolling mill defects. Examples show degradation by carbon arc gouging, weld attack, grinding, scratching with iron tools, splatter, heat tint, folds, paint, slag, seams and slivers. Practices are discussed for the final shop and field repair offabricated austenitic stainless steel equipment, in AISI Types 316L and 904L, that has resulted in unexpected localized attack.
