Australian Nickel Industry Prepares for Global Changes

October 18, 2006 -- Nickel Institute President Stephen Barnett today delivered the keynote address to the Australian Nickel Conference in Perth, Australia. In his presentation, he outlined the supply, demand fundamentals of the nickel market by first-use application, end-use application and by geographic area. He also presented a high level view of projected supply growth over the next few years and spoke about the regulatory changes facing the industry in Europe and globally. He ended his presentation with four recommendations for the Australian nickel industry:

  • During the risk assessment process in Australia, interface and coordinate the supply of data with the European risk assessment process;
  • Prepare to label products according to the Globally Harmonized System (GHS);
  • Anticipate lower Occupational Exposure Limits (OELs) and emission levels in operating permits; and
  • Inform your workers and communities of the hazardous properties of nickel compounds and take measures to reduce risks.

Organized by Paydirt Media Pty,, this two-day conference is billed as the top nickel event in Australia. It offers an opportunity for nickel companies to tell their stories to investors (see: www.australiannickelconference.com)
