Nickel Magazine, November, 2005 -- Nickel has been used in jet engines right from the start. Because of their high-temperature strength characteristics, they are an essential part of the engines that lift thousands of aircraft into the air every day.

However, what is less well known is that nickel is also essential in the manufacture of various key components of today's modern aircraft. Specfically, nickel is used to form aircraft components that are made of composite materials.

To reduce the weight of today's fuel-efficient aircraft, manufacturers are using more and more light-weight composite materials. These are formed in molds that need to be able to maintain their shape over a wide range of temperatures. The unique thermal expansion characteristics of certain nickel alloys fit the bill.
