European Nickel Industry Association Formed

July 4, 2005 -- The European operations of the Nickel Institute have been combined with those of the European Nickel Group, a nickel industry group that has operated in Brussels under the administrative wing of Eurometaux for several years. The new organisation operates administratively as a Branch of the Nickel Institute, and will be known as the European Nickel Industry Association, or ENIA.

ENIA’s main office is in Brussels, at 13 Avenue des Arts.

European nickel use support activities will be administered as part of the ENIA and will continue to be centered on the Birmingham, UK office which is based in Alvechurch. The Nickel Institute’s office at Weymouth Street, London has been closed and its key activities have been relocated to the Brussels office.

The first Secretary-General of ENIA will be Hugo Waeterschoot who will tke up his appointment on November 1, 2005. Bill Molloy, the Nickel Institute’s Managing Director, Europe, will be retiring in September 2005. Until that date, he will be based in the UK, reporting to the President.

Why the changes?

For historical reasons the nickel industry has been operating in Europe with two different organisations in three separate locations, the two former Nickel Development Institute offices in the UK and a Brussels-based group operating under the administrative umbrella of Eurometaux.

The formation of the Nickel Institute in early 2004 brought all the nickel industry’s international activities under one organisation, with a single membership structure. This allows the current restructuring of the nickel industry's activities in Europe, bringing all the European activities under a single administrative umbrella.

The decision to focus on Brussels rather than London reflects the increasing role that the EU institutions are playing in determining the regulatory and political framework that is shaping future nickel production and use in Europe, and the need to upgrade the industry’s interaction with these institutions at all levels – technical and political.

Overwhelmingly, the challenges and opportunities facing nickel in Europe have a very strong international dimension, requiring the activities of the nickel industry in Europe to be very closely co-ordinated and in many cases integrated with the international activities of the industry. For this reason the European Nickel Industry Association will operate administratively as a branch of the Nickel Institute. This close relationship with the Nickel Institute will also apply to most functional activities of ENIA, but ENIA will retain a capability to act independently on issues that are purely local European issues.
