Guide to Photographers

This guide describes how to submit production-quality digital photo files to Nickel Magazine for publication in our print edition. For the best possible results, we print photos at 300 dots per inch (dpi), therefore failure to following the guidelines below will result in your photos not being accepted for publication.

Image Size

Cover photos in Nickel Magazine are 7 inches wide and 8 and one-quarter inches high. At 300 dpi, that means we would need a file that is 2,100 x 2,400 or 20 MB.
Full-page photos inside the magazine can be up to 8 inches wide and 11 inches high.
Photos on pages that have two columns are 3 and a half inches wide.
Photos on pages that have three columns are typically 2 and one-quarter inches wide.

File Size

We would prefer to have the highest quality, original digital file that you have. We have no restrictions on the size of files that we can receive by e-mail, therefore do not compress or alter your original digital files in any way before sending them to us. If you are sending several large files, please send them individually as attachments to individual e-mails.

File Type

We can work with virtually any file type. However, we would prefer to have native Adobe Photoshop documents or TIFF format. If these are not available, we can accept high-resolution, 300-600 dpi, JPEG format.

Images must be saved at high resolution - at least 300 dpi. However, for fine details, 600 dpi is preferrable.

A native Adobe Photoshop document created with layers should be submitted as a 'flattened' document.

If the only source of photos you have is a PDF file, the only type that is suitable for print reproduction is a 'press-ready' psd file. Anything else is unacceptable.

Photos in PowerPoint slide presentations can be extracted in JPEG format, however, the resulting files are low resolution and are not suitable for printing. Therefore we require the original JPEG file that was inserted into the PowerPoint file.

Similarly with photos in Microsoft Word documents. They can be extracted, but the quality suffers. Therefore the original photos that were inerted into the Word document are preferred.

Digital files should be sent by e-mail to the Editor.
