Mint Masters Discuss Health Issues
March 23, 2004 -- Health issues related to the use of nickel in coinage were
discussed today by Nickel Institute President, Dr. Ivor Kirman. The audience was the Health Issues
Sub-Committee of the Mint Masters Conference which was held in San Francisco, California,
U.S.A.
Dr. Kirman outlined the benefits and challenges of using nickel in coins and explained how nickel contact
dermatitis cannot be elicited in individuals through the normal handling of nickel coins.
He explained why the nickel industry is a strong supporter of the intentions behind the European Union's
Nickel Directive and how the industry is engaged in a dialogue with dermatologists, industry and
regulators outside of Europe to encourage similar protective activity in other countries.
