6.3.1 DfE Framework and Process - General -- Mar. '98
DfE identifies the environmental performance associated with a product design and attempts to develop an acceptable level of performance balanced with other design considerations such as function, product performance, and costs. The DfE framework consists of:

a) Initial Design Objectives,
b) Design Assessment,
c) Design Optimization.

Once the design objectives and design options, or alternatives, have been identified, their level of environmental performance may be estimated through a review of the option against the DfE core principles.

Checklists have been developed for each product life cycle stage, which guide the designer in the review of environmental effects. A consolidation of the life cycle review allows the designer to identify the most desirable design option or alternative.

A priority listing of design options may then be evaluated using the other design criteria to arrive at an optimized product design together with an outline of environmental specifications and considerations for implementation.
