6.2.1 DfE Conceptual Framework - General -- Mar. '98 A set of core principles for DfE have been formulated to help structure the environmental review of product design options or alternatives (reference CSA Z762-95).
Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) techniques are also referred to with a view toward highlighting the role which LCA may play in the conceptual framework for DfE.
DfE Core Principles/Key Considerations
Following are the five DfE Core Principles:
Core Principle 1: Depletable Material Resources Minimize the use of depletable material resources.
Core Principle 2: Energy Minimize the use of energy, and where practical, maximize the use of renewable forms of energy.
Core Principle 3: Global Concerns Minimize the use of materials or processes which are known to contribute to global warming, ozone depletion, or acidification.
Core Principle 4: Hazardous Material Risks Minimize the risk associated with the use of hazardous materials and/or processes which result in human or ecological exposures.
Core Principle 5: Local Concerns Eliminate or minimize the use of materials or processes which are known to compromise the local land, air, and water through appropriate source reduction, containment, reuse or recycling, recovery, and disposal activities.
