NiPERA participates in HERAG meeting
NiPERA continues to contribute to and participate in HERAG (Health Risk Assessment Guidance) activities, and attended a meeting in July. HERAG's aim is to provide the regulatory community at the regional and international level with scientific and regulatory guidance on approaches and methodologies that should be employed in the human health risk assessment of metals. This will be accomplished by consolidating existing experience derived from several recent EU risk assessments of metals, and by incorporating recent developments and progress in risk assessment methods.
JUNE 2005
The human health risk assessment report is nearing completion by D-EPA. ENIA and NiPERA are providing comments on what is expected to be the final draft.
The environmental risk assessment report:
The nickel industry's Conclusion (i) environmental research programme is nearing completion and the results are being provided to the risk assessment process.
MAY 2005
NiPERA continues to contribute to the MERAG activity
and participated in a workshop in May which evaluated the scientific foundation of the work. When complete, MERAG (Metals Risk Assessment Guidance) will offer risk assessment guidance which is science-based and specific to metals.

Health Classification Decisions Made
The nickel industry has successfully gained support from TC C&L for some important issues which
had been held in contention with the Rapporteur during the drafting stage of the risk assessment
preparation.

A technical feasibility study has been initiated by the European Nickel Risk Assessment
Group to identify the cost and implications of reducing occupational exposure limits (OELs) in nickel
operations, in line with the risk assessment for nickel.
