Nickel Magazine, June, 2003 -- Nickel alloys and nickel stainless steels
are important materials for building the infrastructure that reduces emissions to the air by
the energy sector.
Flue gas desulphurization systems in coal-fired electric generating stations, for example, are typically
constructed of nickel alloys. In addition, liquified natural gas (which produces fewer greenhouse
gases when burned than other fossil fuels) is shipped around the world in tankers that are lined with
nickel alloys and nickel-containing stainless steel.
Even the batteries in hybrid-electric cars rely on nickel.
In the near future, fuel cells and the equipment used to produce, store and transport hydrogen will also
rely on nickel alloys and stainless steels.
