"The heavy elements are produced in stars and the nuclear burning that occurs in stars fuses hydrogen and helium then fuses the helium into a mixture of carbon and oxygen. The carbon and oxygen can burn in massive stars . . . to get magnesium, silicon and aluminum . . . as the core heats up more and begins to burn, then it produces elements in the iron peak. The dominant element that is formed here is an isotope of nickel called nickel 56."
