Stewardship Policy of the Nickel Institute

Notes:

 This is a revised and expanded version of the old 'product stewardship' policy of the Nickel Development Institute. It was approved by the Board of Directors of the Nickel Institute on 12 May 2005. The main differences are the dropping of the "product" adjective to stewardship in the title and the addition, in the body of the policy, of "process stewardship". The overall effect is to broaden the policy.

Nickel-containing materials and products make essential contributions to a modern, sustainable society. At the same time, there needs to be consideration and effective management of the environmental and health impacts throughout the life cycles of nickel and nickel-containing products.

To promote sustainability and to manage environmental and health impacts, this stewardship policy is established for the Nickel Institute.

Stewardship shall be exercised by the Nickel Institute through:

(1) Support for science and research related to the safe production, use, re-use and recycling of nickel and nickel-containing products;

(2) Encouragement of best practices in the safe production, use, re-use and recycling of nickel and nickel-containing products;

(3) Promotion of nickel-related hazard and risk management education throughout the life cycle of nickel and nickel-containing products;

(4) Promotion of nickel-containing products and technologies that are safe and efficient in their use of energy, resources and materials;

(5) Encouragement of product design, technologies and uses that utilize effectively the sustainability qualities related to nickel and nickel-containing products;

(6) Working relationships with government agencies, nickel life-cycle partners and other stakeholders in the development of sound legislation, regulations and product standards that advance sustainability by protecting and benefiting employees, the community and the environment.

(7) Formal reporting on stewardship to the Board of Directors of the Nickel Institute as required and not less than annually.

For the purposes of this Policy, stewardship covers:

  • processes and practices within the direct control of the member companies of the Nickel Institute. This includes mining, beneficiation, smelting, refining, packaging and transportation.
  • products outside the direct control of the member companies of the Nickel Institute. This includes the marketing, use and end-of-life management of nickel-containing products in ways consistent with elements 1 through 6 above. It further includes the provision of assistance when requested and as appropriate on the further processing and fabrication of nickel products.
