Nickel Institute Launches First e-learning Module for Architects


December 9, 2002 -- Nickel Institute has launched the first in a series of e-learning modules designed specifically for architects. These are interactive learning tools that are downloadable from this web page in Portable Document Format (PDF) so that you can view them off-line at your leisure.

The first module, is entitled "Forms of Stainless Steel Corrosion" and is available here. It was written by Nickel Institute consultant Catherine Houska and edited by Nickel Institute Technical Director Gary Coates. The e-learning system was designed and built by CASTI Digitizing and Multimedia Inc. of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

"Forms of Stainless Steel Corrosion" is seven pages in length and looks briefly at the various forms of corrosion (tarnishing, pitting, crevice corrosion and galvanic corrosion). These can all be avoided in architectural applications by correctly selecting, installing and maintaining stainless steel. To test your understanding of the information presented in the module, the lesson is followed by six multiple-choice questions. Answers can be evaluated immediately.

Getting Started
To download "Forms of Stainless Steel Corrosion," click here. Depending on your connection to the Internet, it may take a few minutes (1.01 MB).

When the file has successfully downloaded to your computer, double click the file Nickel Institute E-learning Lesson 1.exe to begin the installation process.

The files can be installed in any location on your hard drive, although by default it will be installed on "C:Nickel Institute e-learning". You can change the drive letter as you wish.

Locate and double-click on the file start here.pdf to launch the Nickel Institute e-learning system. You will find it in the directory which was specified in the previous step.

We strongly suggest that you "View Instructions" by clicking on the box in the first screen. These instructions will assist you to set up the Flash software and to familarize yourself with the e-learning tools available in the module.

Before downloading a module, please ensure that your computer satisfies the following system requirments:

Memory: 64 MB of RAM and 25 MB of available hard-disk space.

Viewers: Adobe Acrobat Reader 4 (or higher) and Macromedia Flash Player 5 or higher.
