Nickel Magazine, November, 2005 -- Another way of putting this is that almost all of the
nickel that has been extracted from the Earth is still available to be used for the benefit of society.
Nickel alloys (and stainless steels that contain nickel) are so durable and resistant to corrosion that they
have long useful lives as products. However, those products are eventually recycled after use because of the
valuable nickel they contain.
With very few exceptions, nickel is not dissipated to the natural environment. Some exceptions include:
nuclear waste canisters, body implants and spacecrafts.
Some other nickel-containing products are not recovered and recycled. To date, some plated plastic products
and small rechargeable batteries have poor track records of recycling.
The small amount of nickel that goes into these applications is therefore unavailable for use by future
generations.
But the vast majority of applications of nickel results in it eventually becoming available for reuse by
society.
Following, is a list of links to web pages that provide in-depth information on nickel and
recycling: |
