Nickel magazine, October 2002 -- Specialist stainless steel training is now available online, thanks to an initiative of the International Stainless Steel Forum (ISSF). The ISSF is making use of the latest technology to deliver quality education materials with maximum convenience to employers and employees in the global stainless steel industry.
Students world-wide can now enroll in the Stainless Steel Specialist Course, download study materials and take their exams online at the stainless steel portal - www.worldstainless.org
ISSF Secretary General Dr Staffan Malm says undertaking the course represents a solid investment for both individuals and their organizations. "Students can be confident of achieving a substantial knowledge-base on which to build a successful career in the industry or in their design or specification discipline. By completing the course they become an increasingly valuable asset for their employers, with well-developed skills and the confidence to intelligently handle stainless steel."
Greater understanding of the material gives graduates the potential for increased job satisfaction and advancement, while companies benefit from a better-informed, more capable and highly skilled workforce. Given that stainless materials are valuable and mistakes can be costly, it is vital that workers have the knowledge to handle stainless steel correctly. A workforce with specialized knowledge puts organizations in the best position to avoid cost over-runs and delays, as well as building customer confidence throughout the supply chain.
The Stainless Steel Specialist Course is relevant and valuable training for specifiers such as architects and engineers, metalworkers and the stainless steel production and distribution chain. Students receive detailed information on the properties and performance of stainless steel and comprehensive fabrication guidelines.
The Course covers virtually every aspect of stainless steel practice in a series of 16 modules. Modules
include: the mechanical properties of stainless steels; surface finishes; fabrication; cutting; welding and
joining; machining; designing; casting; forging; pipe and tube; cold forming; deep drawing and high
temperature applications.
Two levels of qualification are offered. Students complete a minimum of five modules to achieve an
Intermediate Certificate or a minimum of twelve for a Full Certificate. Mandatory topics are specified to
ensure a solid knowledge base among graduates.
The modular format allows organizations to customize the course to suit their own operations. As well as flexibility, the course offers excellent value, with each unit priced at just US$30.
The ISSF's Stainless Steel Specialist Course brings together established knowledge in engineering and
metallurgy, tested educational methods and the latest technology in database management and online product
delivery.
