Activities in support of the nickel industry position on NACD
(Last revised March 2004)
As an aspect of their product stewardship responsibilities, the member companies of the Nickel
Institute:
- Have communicated the position of the nickel industry to
the International League of Dermatological Societies.
- Continue to support efforts in the European Union to revise and improve EU Directive 94/27/EC (the
so-called "Nickel Directive").
- Are encouraging other jurisdictions to implement measures that will be protective of consumers. Current
efforts are directed towards Australia, Canada and the United States of America. Similar support is
offered to any jurisdiction with an interest in reducing the connection between consumer products and
NACD.
- Continue educational efforts with manufacturers and retailers of consumer products that will be in
contact with the skin.
- Have established the Nickel Dermatitis Science Panel composed of five clinical and research experts to
provide independent advice and recommendations to the nickel industry for dermatological research
associated with nickel.
- Continue to support research, the latest product of which is Nickel and the Skin: Absorption,
Immunology, Epidemiology, and Metallurgy, Hotynek & Maibach, CRC Press, 2002, ISBN
0-8493-1072-5.
